The sun is not purple as far as we know, but there is one place in Sri Lanka where you can see a purple sun. The place is Avissawella, just about 60 Km away from Colombo (around 150 minutes drive depending on traffic) on the road to Ratnapura.
The Purple Sun in this case is actually a resort located in the rural environs of the Seethawaka region. The name is not the only thing that you will find unusual about this resort. In an area bereft of good hotels and resorts, the Purple Sun shines brightly, offering a unique combination of classy accommodation and sumptuous food. Although called a resort, it is not a big property – boutique hotel is perhaps a more appropriate description.
Even before we come to the hotel’s accommodation side, it must be said that this resort is THE place to choose if you want to have a wedding or another function in the Avissawella area. Complete with three wedding halls that can each accommodate more than 300 guests, Purple Sun is popular among both local and foreign guests wishing to tie the knot. One can choose from a number of tailor-made menus to satisfy the hunger pangs of the invitees. The same goes for seminars and workshops, residential or day-to-day, which can easily be arranged at the Purple Sun. All conference facilities are available here.
The newly built main restaurant is the place to discover the delectable creations of the head chef and other chefs who specialise in both Western and Eastern cuisine. Open for all three meals and morning/afternoon tea, this is a good place to unwind too with a long drink in hand. But if you do not feel like sitting down to a formal meal, room service is available at all times. The staff is courteous, attentive and unobtrusive.
It would be great if you can simply relax and indulge at this resort for a few days, but the draw of nature is too good to miss in the region. There are plenty of hiking, jogging and cycling trails for the adventurer in you to choose from. Take a good pair of binoculars, plus a god camera, to see and capture all those memorable nature scenes from chirping birds to verdant jungle. In fact, the vicinity is a favourite haunt of ornithologists. The Purple Sun also offers a relaxing line of activities such as special barbecue nights and adventure sports such as whitewater rafting, paintball and much more. Quad bike (All Terrain Vehicle) rides can also be arranged in the surrounding jungle areas.
If you want to be active but not venture too far either, the resort itself has a large playground that can host several sports at once from cricket to badminton. The swimming pool is also reasonably large. This is also an ideal resort for your next family or office weekend outing, not too far from Colombo but not too close either. Special all-inclusive day rates and facilities are on offer depending on the number of people in your party.
All the rooms are ultra-clean and superb, with many offering a view of distant misty mountains and dense jungle. All the standard facilities are available in the rooms including LCD TV, AC and attached bathrooms. The hotel can be booked through the hotel itself or booking sites such as Booking.Com. Look out for seasonal and special discounts, but make your move early as the Purple Sun is in high demand year round from locals and foreigners alike. Easy to find but hard to leave, Purple Sun is the ideal getaway from your hectic life.
